4 Steps to Make HVAC Systems More Efficient

You want your home to be toasty warm in the winter and nice and cool in the summertime. Of course, you don’t want to pay outrageous monthly electric bills in order to make this possible. How can you achieve both? By making sure your home’s HVAC system is as efficient as possible! An efficient HVAC system can work hard, without sending your energy usage through the roof. A few steps is all it takes to make this happen.

#1 Make your home airtight. This is a great way to reduce energy waste and cost. In a simulation study by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), annual heating and cooling cost savings were as high as 37 percent once a building was made more airtight. The NIST estimates that up to 50 percent of the energy for HVAC use is wasted due to air leakage. This should be the first thing you tackle.

#2 Let mother nature help. Don’t fight this battle alone! For instance, did you know the planting trees right outside your windows will deliver natural shade and therefore let less direct sunlight in. Your HVAC system doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the house cool when you have shade trees helping out!

#3 Set a temperature and keep it. Messing with the thermostat turns the unit on and gets the motor running. This uses electricity. As a family, decide on what temperature the unit will stay at and keep it there. No touching that dial! If you want to change it before you go to bed at night, that’s okay- but no other temperature adjustments throughout the day.

#4 Have your unit regularly maintained. A machine that is well-maintained by a professional HVAC service technician is going to run more efficiently than one that hasn’t. This service call should be made once a year. A JD Mohler service technician will come out to do the following:

  • Replace filters on cooling equipment
  • Check condition of belts and pulleys and replace as needed
  • Clean condenser and evaporator coils
  • Check refrigerant charge and inspect for leaks if charge is low
  • Clear drain lines and pans
  • Check electrical connections
  • Check operation of fan and blower motor and adjust if needed
